Brodovitch (1898 1971) was born in Russia later emigrated to Paris and was one of the key figures in the development of graphic design. At first in Paris he worked as a painter of backdrops for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes.
The poster for Bal Banal is his first published work winning a competition to design the poster ahead of second placed Pablo Picasso.
In the 30’s Brodovitch moved to America firstly to head the Advertising Design Department of the Pennsylvania Museum, later becoming art director of Harpers Bazaar.
